![]() ![]() Rhesus macaques share nearly 98% of their genetic homology with humans, and their similarities include morphology, reproductive physiological characteristics, and biochemical metabolism. ![]() The five commonly used NHP species in biomedical research are rhesus macaque ( Macaca mulatta), cynomolgus macaque ( Macaca fascicularis), African green monkey ( Chlorocebus aethiops sabaeus), baboon ( Papio anubis), and marmoset ( Callithrix jacchus). Nonhuman primates (NHPs), the closest animal models to humans in terms of genetics, physiology, and behavior, play a major role in current biomedical research.
